"Prohibition of Excessive Overtime for Nurses Act," House Bill 834, would ban mandatory overtime for Nurses

House Bill 834, Senate Bill TBA

This bill would restrict the use of mandatory overtime by health care facilities for nurses in order to improve patient safety by ensuring that health care workers who are involved with patient care do not work excessive hours.

This act covers acute care hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, long term care facilities, medical units in the Department of Corrections and all other facilities licensed by the Department of Health. The bill is not meant to bar employees from working voluntary overtime and mandatory overtime would be permitted in the case of a real emergency.
