Wilkes-Barre General Hospital owner Community Health Systems was recently cited by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry for at least 10 violations of Pennsylvania Act 102, which bans mandatory overtime for nurses and other health care workers.
The violations occurred over a period of about two months at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital from late 2017 into early 2018.
The Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals, the union which represents nurses at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, announced the citations in a press release.
Nurses charged that illegal forced overtime has been a recurring issue under Community Health System’s management.
The Department of Labor and Industry has been investigating hundreds of incident reports filed by nurses at the hospital and will continue its investigation to uncover the full extent of any alleged violations, according to PASNAP.
